Salma Khadra Jayyusi Case Study

Salma Khadra Jayyusi (1926) is a Palestinian translator, editor, writer, critic, and anthology producer who brought more than 40 Arabic language literary texts into translation, among these 11 anthologies, some of which contain over 90 writers in one collection.

The Project for the Translation of Arabic, or PROTA, is one of Jayyusi’s biggest and most prominent intellectual achievements. Jayyusi was inspired to launch the project after observing the limited understanding of Arab intellectual work in the West. In 1987, her first anthology was published under PROTA.

Jayyusi has written various paratexts for anthologies and other works in PROTA. The following charts represent the types of paratexts she contributes. This data is based on information we have collected in our database of Arabic literature. Unfortunately, our catalog of PROTA works is incomplete. Despite these works being published in the last few decades, information on them is not easily available. The lack of centralization of Arabic literature in translation is part of the reason why this database is needed.

Jayyusi’s wide network can be ascertained from the acknowledgments of her publications. Almost all PROTA publications were contingent on external funding — from government bodies, individuals, and institutions.
